Grotta Azzurra

Long time ago, the islanders scared to enter the cave because they believed Nereidi, Sirens and devils lived there. In 1826, the local fisherman Angelo Ferraro accompanied the German scholar, August Kopisch, and the painter Ernst Fries in to the cave. Their tales of the magical blue sea cave led to the Grotta Azzurra becoming Capri's number one tourist site.
The blue water was caused by the reflection of the sun. The height of this cave is about 1 meter, that's why visitor should lie down when enter the cave. The best time to visit this place between 12pm and 2pm.

How to get to the Grotta Azzurra

  • By boat: a 10 minute boat journey from Marina Grande or as part of the tour of the island.
  • By bus: in Anacapri, catch the bus from the bus stop, 50 meters from Piazza Vittoria.
  • On foot: from the center of Anacapri, walk along Viale T. de Tommaso, Via Pagliaro and Via Grotta Azzurra (3.5 km).
